Mountains in southern alava

The Toloño, Cantabria and Codes mountain ranges extend from east to west in southern Alava, forming a barrier that separates the Mediterranean and Atlantic basins.
The Mountains of Southern Alava are considered to be a Special Protection Area for birds (SPA). Together with the Lagunas de Laguardia, they are situated in the area with the highest density of bird species in Spain.
This area forms part of the Natura 2000 network. It is a Special Protection Area for Birds and a Site of Community Importance, within the Sierra Cantabria mountain range.
Species of special interest
Griffon Vulture, Egyptian Vulture, Golden Eagle, Peregrine Falcon, Eagle Owl, Alpine Swift, Rock Thrush, Subalpine Warbler, Western Orphean Warbler, Marsh Tit, Chough.
